Lieutenant Henry Jackson arrived in New Zealand in 1855 after the disbanding of the East India Company and settled in Lower Hutt, Back Creek, at the north end of Kings Crescent in 1882.
The property was valued at 1200 pounds sterling or $2400.
Henry was Surveyor in Chief, Wellington Province. The initial survey peg is in the foyer of Wellington Museum, Buckle Street Mount Cook Wellington. He had a family of six boys and two girls.
His son Charles, father of Llyndall, cleared and farmed a property in Kopuaranga, north of Masterton.
Henry and half brother Hugh bought 1036 acres, part of the 40 Mile Bush and named the farm "Val d'Or" after some family property in France.
In 1890, 3700 sheep were shorn. Charles took over the farm met Mabel whom he married soon after.
Llyndall was born in 1901, Roma, Ivon and Margaret followed. |
